Nationwide Save Sangai Campaign

by fearless | 10:47 PM in | comments (0)

An animal found only in Manipur is the Sangai. It lives in the marshy wetland in Keibul Lamjao. Its habitat is located in the southern parts of the Loktak Lake, which is the largest freshwater lake in Eastern India. It is also one of the seven Ramsar sites of international importance. The habitat of the Sangai is now protected as the Keibul Lamjao National Park.

The only floating National park in the world.

Due to habitat degradation and human activities, the deer have been extirpated from much of their historical range and now persist in small , fragmented population. At last count there were only 162 left in the national park.

The deer is currently listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species(CITES) and is considered endangered by the World Conservation Union(IUCN).

Please join the campaign and voice for the conversation of this rare and endangered species.Your valuable contribution will help in creating awareness about the need of Sangai Conservation.

Is MOBILE a THREAT?

by fearless | 1:16 PM in | comments (0)

Are mobile phones dangerous ? :

These are some facts that must clarify your answer...

Radiowaves given off by mobiles can heat-up body tissue, having damaging effects Radiowaves are not powerful enough to cause heat damage to the body

Magnetic fields created by mobile phones can affect the way that your body cells work
The magnetic fields are incredibly small, and so unlikely to affect cells in our body

People who make long mobile phone calls sometimes complain of fatigue, headaches, and loss of concentration The same results have never been reported in laboratory conditions and may be due to other factors in modern lifestyles

Mobile phone users are 2.5 times more likely to develop cancer in areas of the brain adjacent to their phone ears Researchers admit it's unclear this increase is linked to using mobiles

The International Agency for Research on Cancer found a link between childhood cancer and power lines. Like mobile phones, power lines also emit radiation The radiation produced by powerlines is a differnet kind of radiation, with much more energy than that coming from mobile phones

Radiofrequency waves similar to those in mobile phones altered the gene expression in nematode worms Worms are not humans, there is no guarantee that our brain cells will behave in the same way.

Following recommendations are:

* Use hands-free to decrease the radiation to the head.
* Keep the mobile phone away from the body.
* Do not telephone in a car without an external antenna.

Linux Xp Desktop 2008

by fearless | 12:39 PM in | comments (1)

Linux XP Professional Edition is a universal and secure operating system for Russian speakers designed for home and business use. It is based on freely available sources from Red Hat Linux and Fedora Core.

The product is based on open source software. It is as Microsoft Windows compatible as it is possible in Linux. Linux XP Desktop combines Linux productivity and security with Microsoft Windows usability.

What really impress me is that it's look,it's inbuilt feature like it's ability to run windows applications, virtual machine....

Using QEMU virtual machine you can install any operating system, including Windows family. You can install application in virtual machine that will run just as they are running on common PC.

Using QEMU you get maximum compatibility with Windows.

You can create several virtual machines with different configurations and with different sets of applications. You can do anything you like with your virtual environment no risk, you can alway create backup copy of your virtual hard drive.

QEMU lets you run several virtual machines simultaneously.

Sounds interesting huh!

VMware_Workstation allows you to perform such task.

You can switch between operating systems instantly with a click of a mouse.

VMWare allows you to run 'virtual machines' inside Linux. It is not an emulator.

It provides a virtual computer within Linux which can boot whichever OS you decide to put on the filesystem image that is used as a harddrive. It will run DOS 6.22, Win 3.1, Win9x, WinNT/2000/XP/2003, Linux, Novell, and more. The only main requirement is a 400 MHz or better machine, along with lots of RAM (128M minimum, 256M recommended).

VMware Workstation is powerful desktop virtualization software for software developers/testers and enterprise IT professionals that runs multiple operating systems simultaneously on a single PC. Users can run Windows, Linux, NetWare, or Solaris x86 in fully networked, portable virtual machines - no rebooting or hard drive partitioning required. VMware workstation delivers excellent performance and advanced features such as memory optimization and the ability to manage multi-tier configurations. Essential features such as virtual networking, live snapshots, drag and drop and shared folders, and PXE support make VMware workstation the most powerful and indispensable tool for enterprise IT developers and system administrators.
With millions of customers and dozens of major product awards over the last six years, VMware Workstation is a proven technology that improves productivity and flexibility. An indispensable tool for software developers and IT professionals worldwide.

VMware Workstation works by enabling multiple operating systems and their applications to run concurrently on a single physical machine. These operating systems and applications are isolated in secure virtual machines that co-exist on a single piece of hardware. The VMware virtualization layer maps the physical hardware resources to the virtual machine's resources, so each virtual machine has its own CPU, memory, disks, I/O devices, etc. Virtual machines are the full equivalent of a standard x86 machine.

VMware Workstation enables users to:
- Configure and test multi-tier applications, application updates, and operating system patches on a single PC
- Easily restore or share archived test environments, reducing repetitive configuration and set-up time
- Streamline computer-based training by allowing students to always start from a "clean" state and experiment with multiple operating systems, applications, and tools in secure, isolated virtual machines
- Run software demos of complex or multi-tier configurations on a single laptop
- Accelerate help desk resolution of end-user problems with a library of pre-configured virtual machines

New in Version 6.0.4

Workstation 6.0.4 adds full support for the following operating systems:
* 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Vista SP1 as host and guest operating systems. Editions include Windows Vista Enterprise, Business, Home Basic, Home Premium, and Ultimate.

Note: The Integrated Virtual Debuggers support most of these Windows Vista SP1 operating systems:
* Eclipse Integrated Virtual Debugger can be hosted on all 32-bit versions of these Windows Vista editions. It supports 32-bit and 64-bit Enterprise, 32-bit Ultimate, and 32-bit Business editions as a guest.
* Visual Studio Integrated Virtual Debugger can be hosted on all 32-bit and 64-bit versions of these Windows Vista editions. It supports 32-bit and 64-bit Enterprise, Ultimate, and Business editions as a guest.

Workstation 6.0.4 addresses the following security issues:
* On Windows hosts, if VMCI is enabled, a guest can execute arbitrary code in the context of the vmx process on the host. This is a compiler-dependent vulnerability. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) assigned the CVE number CVE-2008-2099 to this issue. (bug 234208)
* A security vulnerability related to the host-guest file system (HGFS) could cause a buffer overflow. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) assigned the CVE number CVE-2008-2098 to this issue. (bug 234214)

Known Issues Fixed in Workstation 6.0.4:
# Virtual machines fail unexpectedly after a Symantec virus definition update from version 213 to version 220. (bug 253615)
# If you attempt to power on a virtual machine that is hosted on an IBM IntelliStation Z Pro, the host crashes with a blue screen. (bug 245570)
# When you attempt dial up using some USB ISDN modems with a virtual machine, you get a "cable not plugged in" error. (bug 166158)
# On Ubuntu 6.06 guests (which use Xorg 7.0), upgrading VMware Tools from the version installed with Workstation 6.0.0 fails. (bug 196141)
# On Ubuntu 7.x guests, after you install VMware Tools, the vmxnet driver is not being used. (bug 231499)
# On Ubuntu 7.10 guests, the Ubuntu Network Manager sometimes erroneously reports that there is no network connection, even though one exists and the VMware Tools vmxnet networking driver is loaded and working properly. (bug 240525)
# On Ubuntu 8.04 hosts (which use kernel 2.6.24), when you install VMware Workstation, the vmnet module does not build. (bug 236605)

Puppy Linux Distro - v4

by fearless | 6:21 PM in | comments (0)

A small, fast operating system running from CDs, USB sticks and hard disks.

It is similar to Linux Mint.

But the interesting fact is that it can be boot from a USB stick.

Operating Systems, Linux and little Puppies:

Puppy Linux is an operating system, which means it is that which makes a computer able to function at all, it is that which allows all the hardware on a computer to talk to each other and that which enables applications to run. Other famous operating systems are Microsoft Windows, Apple's OSX and MSDOS. Puppy takes its ancestory from Linux and so, like most other Linux-based operating systems, it is a completely free and open source.

There are a number of things that make Puppy different from other Linux derivatives, but the most significant is its small size, around 80MB! This lends itself to some very useful and unique features;

* 'Live' booting from CDs, USB sticks and other portable media.
* Ability to run entirely from RAM, making it unusually fast and particularly relevant to modern PCs with solid state CF drives, such as Wyse & HP/Compaq 'thin clients' and the ASUS EeePC & similar 'next generation' hand-helds.
* Very low minimum system requirements, runs happily on old Pentiums with as little as 32Mb RAM.
* Sub-60 second boot times.

At last some of my software collection comes out to be useful.Actually I was having problem with my Seagate hard disk for last few days(disk error), so I decided to go to the Seagate service center for replacement, they told me that it will take at least 7 days for replac.. as I'm a compfreak
having a day without using a computer was not possible for me.
I thought why should I not try Linux Mint as it is a OS that can be boot from a cd(for more information:http://forfreaks.blogspot.com/2008/05/linux-mint-4.html).
On reaching home I switched on the computer and inserted my Linux Mint(bootable cd) & I was suprised to see it worked as there was no hard disk on my computer I was able to access net, watch movies etc
Isn't is really great.
